Debenhams was established in 1778 by William Clark at 44 Wigmore Street in London's West End selling expensive fabrics, bonnets, gloves and parasols. By 1950, Debenhams was the largest department store group in the UK, owning 84 companies and 110 stores. Debenhams owns and operates 178 stores in the UK, Republic of Ireland and Denmark which together provide over 12 million square feet of trading space. Debenhams occupies the most sites of any of the traditional department store groups in the UK. Debenhams is leading international, multi-channel brand with a proud British heritage which trades out of 246 stores across 28 countries.
